Here are some of the Solutions that have been mailed to us. I recommend that you also send these suggestions to the governing officials as well as getting other people involved to do the same. It is a very good idea to send us a copy of the letters you send to your officials because this is constant proof that people are responding to these matters, so it makes it much more difficult for these matters to get swept under the rug and forgotten about. Please Keep the letters coming and be sure to sign the petition too to show your support!
Dear Mr. Archibald,
Recently we have had a lot of
media attention directed to Semi-Truck parking at local residents.
Realizing this is a City Ordinance can you please direct me to whom ever I
might contact about having this city ordinance removed. My idea is
simple for many and a possibility of profitability for the City of
Abilene.
Why not let our men and women come
home after being on the rode for so long? The city could require each
truck to be registered with the city for the residence it would be parking
at. The city could require that the owner/operator keep the vehicle
directly off the city streets once they arrive home (i.e. park in
driveways, yards, etc.). The registration of these trucks could be an
annual registration of less than $100.00 annually. Imagine how much
revenue this would generate for the city. With these registration fees
the city could generate enough revenue to improve city streets and prevent
discrimination against the very people who serve Abilene.
These men and women bring you and
I the supplies we need for home, work or even vacationers here in
Abilene. We need to work together and not against individuals who pay
taxes just like you and I. They deserve fair treatment from everyone.
What if there were a city ordinance against people like Lydia Long. She
lives no where near any of the truck drivers she complains about. Why not
make her green picket fence against city ordinance?
Please help me in my quest for
fair change in the City of Abilene.
Thank you,
Tonya
Staff Comment I think this is a very good idea about the registration of the semi power unit and the address that it BELONGS at as well. This not only assures that the power unit is secure and being watched over by the owner at their respective residence but it also supplies the City with information on what power units actually belong to drivers who live within the community, but also will show potentially threatening situations that may be in the making from an unknown power unit that is not registered with the City, or at the registered address. I think a very small fee might be in order for the registration process, but do not think that a person who is both a property owner who pays taxes on the property and on the semi they own should be subjected to yet another money drain such as a storage type of fee . The most important point in this is that the semi should ALWAYS be as near to the driver as possible in order for it to be secure! Preferably at the residence because that provides maximum security that protects the community from destruction that could result if a semi fell into the wrong hands. It also makes the belongings of the driver less likely to be stolen as well. Bottom Line it makes sense for the trucks to be domiciled at the home of the driver during time off!! for these reasons:
